HealthX Labs

HealthX Labs is a healthcare incubator for students across the Penn campus to come together to form companies to solve exciting healthcare problems.

How it works:

  • HealthX provides a list of healthcare problems that need more smart people working on them
  • You (the entrepreneur) sign up to participate
  • We form you into teams with students from across the university with diverse and complimentary areas of expertise
  • Over the course of the year, your team will create a prototype solution to your problem that forms the basis of a company, with financial support from HealthX Labs

Because the ideas are yours, 100% of the Intellectual Property is yours too!

The winning team will receive $5,000 to take their company forward.

Sign-ups for 2015-2016 are now closed. Please check back next fall!

Who can participate?
  • Any full-time student at the University of Pennsylvania (undergraduate or graduate)
How do teams form?
  • Interested students should apply using our online application. Please see the "Apply" tab for details.
  • HealthX Labs then creates multidisciplinary teams to balance applicants' interdisciplinary backgrounds
  • Teams will include at least one student from Medicine, Engineering, and Wharton and will in total be 3-5 people
Do I get to choose the problem I will work on?
  • HealthX Labs will provide a set of ~10 problems for applicants to choose from
  • On the application, you will be able to rank the problems you want to work on
  • We will do our best to assign you to a team with one of your top problems, but we cannot guarantee that you will be assigned to your #1 choice
  • Once teams are formed, they will have the option to switch problems once
I have a friend(s) I want to work with on this. Can we be part of the same team?
  • Yes, as long as the team meets the criteria above. There is a spot on the application to indicate other people you want to work with.
Will we be funded?
  • Teams will receive money from HealthX Labs to support prototype development and for achieving milestones
  • There will be a $5,000 cash prize for the winning team at Demo Day at the end of the year
How does the Intellectual Property work?
  • Because you come up with the ideas yourselves, 100% of the intellectual property belongs to the team members.
