Innovation & Entrepreneurship in Medicine Series 📖

Are you interested in healthcare innovation, entrepreneurship, medical devices, startups, or learning how clinical ideas become real-world solutions? This fall, PennHealthX is offering Innovation & Entrepreneurship in Medicine, a new seminar series designed to introduce medical students to the process of identifying clinical problems, developing innovative solutions, and translating those ideas into practice. Attending this seminar series counts towards completion of your HMET certificate!

Across 12 weekly sessions, you’ll learn about:

• Identifying and validating unmet clinical needs
• Understanding patients, clinicians, and other healthcare stakeholders
• Ideation, prototyping, and minimum viable products
• Intellectual property and patenting
• Navigating the FDA and regulatory pathway
• Clinical validation and translational research
• Funding, commercialization, and pitching to investors
• Lessons and experiences from physician entrepreneurs

Sessions are highly interactive and case-based, with students working in teams throughout the series to develop a healthcare innovation and ultimately pitch their idea to win prizes! Everyone can participate! No prior experience in entrepreneurship, business, or engineering is required. Dinner or snacks provided at every session. Whether you already have an idea for a medical innovation or are simply curious about entrepreneurship, this is an opportunity to learn from experts, explore the entrepreneurial process, and get hands-on experience developing a healthcare innovation.

Intellectual Property Dinner Talk 💡

What happens when you come up with an idea that could change patient care? Who owns it, how do you protect it, and how does it make it from your notebook to the clinic?

PennHealthX is excited to welcome Michael Hartman, Associate General Counsel for the University of Pennsylvania and Penn Medicine, for a session on intellectual property (IP) and patenting. Mr. Hartman represents Penn Medicine in legal matters involving technology transfer and innovation and serves as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Temple University, where he lectures on topics closely related to those we’ll be discussing! We will cover:

• Why does IP matter?
• When should you file a patent?
• How do you file a patent?
• What makes an invention patentable?
• Do I own my inventions as a student?

Physician Contract Negotiations Lunch Talk 📄

PennHealthX is bringing back our negotiating physician contracts event, a critical skill for every future physician! Join us on Monday, October 26th from 1:00 to 2:00 PM for a discussion with Emily Ast, JD (founder of AST Physician Contracts). Emily has reviewed and negotiated thousands of physician employment agreements across specialties, and she will walk through contract basics you can start learning now, such as employment models, compensation, and non-competes, and how to prepare for negotiating your first job. Food will be provided!
